Just what the heck is kringla?
If you aren’t originally from the middle Midwest, or haven’t lived in the area for long, you may not be acquainted with kringla - yet. Oftentimes called or confused with a Danish kringle, traditional kringla is a simple, soft, sugar cookie, usually shaped similarly to a pretzel. Kringla is most often associated with Norwegian heritage (in central Iowa, at least), but recipes can be traced back to many parts of Scandinavia.
Many people think of Christmastime when they see kringla, and can remember the family getting together to bake pan after pan of it around the holidays. But, kringla isn’t just for Christmas anymore. With our different flavors and shapes, any occasion is a good occasion for kringla!
It’s fairly easy to find kringla sold by the half-dozen in grocery stores and gas stations around Iowa, but the best way to get your money’s worth is to order it fresh from our oven - see for yourself!
